Our Concern With Asbestos

Asbestos containing material was used as the roofing product of choice in the 1960s and 1970s in Kenya but is now classified as hazardous waste. According to the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), asbestos containing material must not be re-used, recovered, recycled or offered for sale. It must be disposed through a licensed asbestos landfill. This is the universally most accepted disposal method.

In November, 2016 NEMA directed that all asbestos roofs that are worn out, broken or dilapidated be removed and disposed into a NEMA licensed asbestos disposal landfill. The Authority also advised that no rain water should be collected even from those roofs that are not worn out.
